In order to consolidate and improve the delivery of services to children and families in Central Missouri,
Boys & Girls Town acquired 5.8 acres and six existing cottages on Bearfield Road – a property of Woodhaven Learning Center – in December 2004. This site will allow Boys & Girls Town to increase the number of youth it can accommodate from 24 in Phase I to 48 in Phase II – half boys, half girls. The average length of stay for a child at Boys & Girls Town is about eight months, so even more children can begin treatment at this facility during the course of a single year.
In addition, the layout of the cottages and the location of the facility on a large, unified campus has enabled this site to establish intensive residential care for up to 24 youth for the first time in Boone County. Intensive residential care addresses the needs of those children who have the most challenges in their lives.
Phase I renovations to the property were completed in November 2005. The first two cottages were remodeled and designed for intensive residential programming. Phase II is now under way to renovate two additional residential cottages with on-site classrooms allowing Boys & Girls Town to serve 48 youth – doubling our previous capacity. The surrounding campus grounds will be modified to provide common areas, a central dining hall and recreational opportunities for the children receiving treatment.
The capital campaign required to provide funding for this ambitious project is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
