Boys & Girls Town Honors Missouri S&T Groups for Outstanding Contributions to Children
St. James, Mo. (December 19, 2007) – Children, staff, board members, volunteers and supporters from the community gathered at Boys & Girls Town of Missouri for the annual Candlelight Dinner in which the agency thanks and recognizes community members for supporting and contributing to the children served by Boys & Girls Town.
“We have a tradition at Candlelight to shine a little light on individuals, groups and families who have definitely touched children’s lives over the past year,” said Vince Hillyer, president. “As I look out over this crowd, I could name person after person and business after business who made a vital contribution to our children.
Members of Phi Kappa Theta and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities and Lambda Sigma Pi sorority chapters at Missouri University of Science and Technology were honored with the agency’s Highlight of Hope award for their outstanding contributions to the children living at Boys & Girls Town’s St. James campus.
“Our Highlight of Hope award is about a whole bunch of young people who have worked hard and selflessly to support the children of Boys & Girls Town,” said Hillyer. “They have enthusiastically volunteered to become involved with, or even to create special events and activities that benefit our children.”
Phi Kappa Theta has held a Christmas party for younger boys living on campus for several years. This group of young men solicited local businesses for donations which they used to purchase presents for the boys.
For the past two years, members of Pi Kappa Alpha volunteered at the agency’s annual Trivia Night helping to serve more than 300 guests. The group asked local businesses for donated items to be included in a special auction package.
The women of Lambda Sigma Pi held a fundraiser to purchase gifts for children at Christmas and birthdays, as well as other special activities throughout the year while they are with us.
“They provide opportunities for our children to heal, create new and fun memories, and give the kids hope,” said Hillyer. “What a wonderful group of young people who already know the importance of service to others.” |
